Thabet Azzawi

Thabet Azzawi (Oudist, Multi-instrumentalist & Composer):

born in 1990 and comes from DeirAzzor, Syria.
There he received his first music lessons at the age of four, then shortly thereafter he began his journey with the oud, one of the most flexible and dynamic string instruments and ubiquitous in Arabic / Oriental music culture.

He leads workshops on new playing techniques and composition.

He founded “the Syrian Music Week”

As a virtuoso he played with famous bands and performers such as Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, BAP, Konstantin Wecker, and others.

For the Landesbühnen Sachsen he composed the music for the play “Verbrennungen”.

He played with the Dresden Philharmonic in the fairy tale opera “The Arabian Princess”

Thabet Azzawi supported the State Youth Orchestra of Saxony as a soloist. The CD “West-Eastern Divan” was released from this collaboration.

He plays both as a soloist and in several bands and projects most importantly with “Banda Comunale” against racism and nationalism.

He holds workshops and lectures about this commitment and the techniques of fighting right-wing extremism.

Thabet Azzawi founded the “Stringed Compass” duo with guitarist Max Loeb Garcia by composing and arranging the music and playing the instruments oud, cümbüs, riq, def and cajon.
